About this conversion
USDT (Tether) is a stablecoin designed to trade 1:1 with the US dollar. Unlike bitcoin or ether, it isn't meant to move with the market — it's meant to sit still at $1.00. Tether, the company behind the token, maintains that peg by holding reserves — mostly short-term US Treasuries and cash equivalents, plus smaller allocations to gold, bitcoin, and secured loans — worth at least as much as the USDT in circulation, rather than through an algorithm. Tether's most recent public attestation (prepared by the accounting firm BDO Italia and published May 2026) reported roughly $191.7 billion in reserve assets against $183.5 billion of outstanding USDT, including an $8.23 billion buffer above what's owed. Because it's asset-backed rather than algorithmic, USDT trades within a fraction of a cent of $1.00 almost all the time — the live rate above shows the real current price rather than a hardcoded $1.00, so you can see exactly how close the peg is holding right now.

How the math works
Converting USDT to USD is close to 1:1 math: multiply your USDT amount by the live rate shown above, which is normally within about $0.001–$0.003 of exactly $1.00. The peg has held closely for nearly all of USDT's history, with one well-known exception — during the May 2022 collapse of the Terra/UST stablecoin, contagion fear briefly pushed USDT down to around $0.945 on some exchanges before it recovered within roughly a day, as Tether processed several billion dollars of redemptions to defend the peg. USDT is sometimes confused with a separate event: the March 2023 depeg tied to Silicon Valley Bank's collapse hit USDC (which held reserves at SVB), not USDT — Tether had no SVB exposure and USDT briefly traded slightly above $1 as traders rotated out of USDC. To actually convert, most people sell USDT for USD on an exchange's spot market or built-in "Convert" tool — Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, and Bybit all support USDT/USD or USDT/USDC pairs — then withdraw the USD to a linked bank account via ACH or wire transfer. Each platform sets its own withdrawal fees, minimums, and processing times, so check the current schedule in your account before you cash out.
Common questions
Is USDT the same as USD?
No. USDT is a privately issued token that represents a claim on US dollars held in Tether's reserves — it is not legal tender and carries issuer (counterparty) risk that a bank-held US dollar does not. It is designed to trade at $1.00, and normally does, but it is not literally the same asset as a US dollar.
How much is 1 USDT in USD?
About $1.00. USDT targets a 1:1 peg with the US dollar, so 1 USDT is usually worth between $0.998 and $1.002 depending on market conditions. Check the live converter above for the current price rather than assuming an exact $1.00.
Is USDT linked to USD?
Yes. USDT is a reserve-backed stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. Tether maintains the peg by holding reserves — mostly US Treasuries and cash equivalents — worth at least as much as the USDT in circulation, and by allowing large holders to redeem USDT for dollars directly with Tether.
Is converting USDT to USD taxable?
In most tax regimes, yes — because crypto (including stablecoins) is generally treated as property, converting USDT to USD is a disposal you report, similar to selling any other crypto asset. Because USDT targets $1.00, the taxable gain or loss on a routine conversion is often at or near zero, but the reporting requirement still applies. This is general information, not tax advice — see this site's Form 8949 guide (under /tax) and consult a tax professional for your situation.
What is USDT.e or USDT0 — is it the same as USDT?
No. USDT.e is a legacy bridged token from the old Avalanche Bridge, and USDT0 is a newer LayerZero-powered omnichain version Tether has partnered on — both are distinct tokens from native USDT and are not issued or redeemable by Tether in the same way. If you see a balance labeled with a suffix like this (sometimes garbled to "USDT.z" in search or wallet UIs), confirm which specific token and chain you're holding before assuming it's fungible 1:1 with plain USDT elsewhere.
Which exchanges can I convert USDT to USD on?
Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, and Bybit all let you convert USDT to USD, either through their spot market (selling a USDT/USD or USDT/USDC pair) or a built-in convert feature, followed by a bank withdrawal via ACH or wire. Exact fees, supported currencies, and withdrawal minimums vary by platform and region, so check each exchange's current fee schedule before converting.
