What Is Orca Crypto? The Solana DEX and Whirlpools Explained
Learn what Orca crypto is, how concentrated liquidity Whirlpools work on Solana, trading fee tiers, Solana network costs, and the Formation merger notice.
By Jonathan West · Updated October 2026
Orca is a decentralized exchange on Solana that lets people swap tokens and lets liquidity providers earn trading fees by placing funds in chosen price ranges through concentrated liquidity Whirlpools.
It allows direct token trades on Solana without a central intermediary while letting liquidity providers target capital into specific price intervals rather than spreading it across all possible prices.

About orca dex on solana
Orca is a decentralized exchange (DEX) on Solana where you swap tokens and where liquidity providers earn trading fees by placing funds in chosen price ranges, called concentrated liquidity Whirlpools. Orca runs on Solana mainnet as an automated market maker (AMM), so trades execute against pools of deposited tokens through smart contracts instead of an order book. Orca's docs and website say Orca and Loopscale are merging to form Formation, so product names, fees and features can change. Check docs.orca.so before using it.
How it actually works
Orca uses liquidity pools governed by on-chain programs where trades execute directly against pools of deposited tokens. Anyone holding a supported Solana wallet can swap one token for another without an intermediary holding custody of the assets.
Orca uses Whirlpools, an automated market maker design built around concentrated liquidity. In a standard full-range pool, a liquidity provider deposits two tokens to support trades across every possible price from zero to infinity. Whirlpools allow liquidity providers to select a custom minimum price and maximum price for their capital. When market trading occurs within that chosen price interval, the provider's capital facilitates trades and earns a share of the fees. If the market price leaves the chosen range, the position stops earning fees and is held fully in one of the two tokens. When the two tokens' relative price changes, a liquidity provider can suffer impermanent loss. What is impermanent loss explains how.
Trading fees on Orca depend on the specific pool configuration and market conditions. Orca uses predefined fee tiers linked to tick spacing values on Solana mainnet. A tick spacing of 1 carries a 0.01% fee rate, designed for pegged stable pairs. A tick spacing of 2 carries a 0.02% fee rate, while a tick spacing of 4 has a 0.04% fee rate for stable pairs. Correlated assets typically use a tick spacing of 8 with a 0.05% fee rate. More volatile pairs use higher rates: a tick spacing of 16 charges 0.16%, a tick spacing of 64 charges a standard 0.30% fee rate, a tick spacing of 96 charges 0.65%, and a tick spacing of 128 charges 1.00% for high-volatility pairs. Exotic pairs use a tick spacing of 256 with a 2.00% fee rate. Full-range, passive Splash Pools use a tick spacing of 32896 with a 1.00% fee rate. In addition to these static tiers, Orca features Adaptive Fees that automatically raise a pool's base rate during periods of elevated market volatility.
Every time a swap executes against a Whirlpool, the resulting trading fee is split three ways: 87% goes to liquidity providers, 12% goes to the Orca decentralized autonomous organization treasury, and 1% goes to the Climate Fund. Beyond trading fees, interacting with Orca requires paying Solana network transaction costs. Position creation requires an on-chain account rent payment of about 0.0088 SOL, which is refundable when the position is closed. A standard transaction costs about 0.000010 SOL when SOL is not one of the swapped tokens, or about 0.000005 SOL when SOL is included as a token in the trade, and neither fee is refundable. In uncommon situations where an uninitialized TickArray must be created for a new price range, an additional non-refundable network cost of about 0.07 SOL applies.
Orca's smart contracts are open source, and the Orca website states that the protocol has been running since 2021 and was audited by 4 or more independent security firms. Even with audits, interacting with decentralized finance protocols carries underlying smart-contract risk, as explained in our overview of DeFi risks and regulation. At the time of writing, Orca's documentation and website state that Orca and Loopscale are merging to form Formation. Because of this merger, names, features, and pool fee structures can change over time. Users should review the official documentation at Orca Docs before committing capital or executing transactions.
Start here
- 1Connect a compatible Solana wallet. Ensure it holds sufficient SOL to cover non-refundable transaction fees and refundable account rent.
- 2Review the token pool details on Orca to verify the exact token mint addresses and inspect the fee tier assigned to that specific pair.
- 3Set an acceptable slippage tolerance before executing a swap to manage price execution boundaries, referencing the mechanics in What is slippage.
- 4Decide whether to provide concentrated liquidity within a custom price range or deposit into a full-range position (a Splash Pool) for a more passive approach.
- 5Start with a small test transaction. Then check [docs.orca.so](https://docs.orca.so/) for current pool parameters and the Formation merger.
Strengths
- Whirlpools allow liquidity providers to concentrate capital in narrow price intervals for higher capital efficiency compared to standard pools.
- Liquidity providers as a group receive 87% of each Whirlpool trading fee, shared among positions whose price range covers the trade.
- Dynamic Adaptive Fees automatically raise base pool fee rates during periods of elevated market volatility.
Common misunderstandings
- If the market price moves outside a chosen price range, the position stops earning fees and converts entirely into one token.
- Liquidity providers face impermanent loss risk whenever the relative price of the deposited tokens changes.
- Smart-contract vulnerabilities remain a risk on open-source protocols despite security audits from independent firms.
Common questions
Is Orca a DEX or a coin?
Orca is a decentralized exchange on Solana. Its docs describe a trading and liquidity protocol. This page states no token price, supply, market cap or exchange listing. Live token prices come from market-data sites, and you can check live rates in the PipeFlare crypto converter.
What fees does Orca charge?
Orca applies trading fee tiers linked to pool tick spacing on Solana mainnet, ranging from 0.01% for pegged stable pairs up to 2.00% for exotic pairs, with standard volatile pairs commonly set at 0.30%. Some pools use Adaptive Fees that increase the base rate automatically during times of elevated volatility. Every swap fee allocates 87% to active liquidity providers, 12% to the Orca decentralized autonomous organization treasury, and 1% to the Climate Fund.
What is a Whirlpool?
A Whirlpool is Orca's concentrated liquidity automated market maker protocol on Solana that lets liquidity providers allocate funds to custom price ranges. Instead of spreading deposits evenly across every price from zero to infinity, providers select custom upper and lower price bounds. The position earns trading fees only while the market price stays inside that selected range, shifting into a single token if the price leaves the interval.
Is Orca safe?
No DeFi protocol is risk-free. Orca's website says it has run since 2021 and was audited by 4 or more independent security firms, and its smart contracts are open source. Those are Orca's own claims. Audits cannot rule out smart-contract bugs, so you can lose funds in any pool.
Does Orca work on Ethereum?
Orca's documentation describes Orca as operating on Solana mainnet, and it does not describe an Ethereum version. Developers integrate through the Whirlpools SDK (software development kit, in TypeScript and Rust) or a public REST API (application programming interface).
What is Formation?
Orca's docs and website say Orca and Loopscale are merging to form Formation, so product names, fees and features can change. Check Orca Docs for current terms.
