About connecting phantom to ledger
Which Ledger you own decides how you connect it to Phantom: by USB cable in the browser extension, or over Bluetooth in the mobile app. In the guides we publish here at PipeFlare, what we see readers get wrong most often is starting setup before verifying device compatibility. Phantom documents supported models on its own hardware wallet support table, and we confirmed those listings directly on November 2, 2026. Only three models connect to the mobile app over Bluetooth: the Nano X, Stax, and Flex. The Nano S and Nano S Plus do not support mobile pairing. They connect only to the browser extension through a cable. Ledger's newer Nano Gen5 is listed as completely unsupported by Phantom. If you own a device from Trezor or Tangem, Phantom also lists those brands as unsupported. For unsupported devices, pick a compatible model or review options in best crypto hardware wallets and Ledger vs Trezor. Phantom also notes that Saga Seed Vault from Solana Mobile is end of support, and that Saga devices no longer receive updates. Phantom maintains its supported hardware table on its own site, so listings can change when new updates arrive. Check that table before purchasing a device specifically for Phantom. Never enter your recovery phrase into Phantom, a website, or any application. Phantom support will never ask for your recovery phrase or your private keys. How it actually works
A hardware wallet keeps your private keys offline while still allowing you to view assets, sign transactions, and interact with apps through Phantom. Phantom acts as an interface for balances and network transactions, but it never holds your private keys. Learn more about storage tradeoffs in cold wallet vs hot wallet and interface features in is Phantom wallet safe. After you link an account, Phantom still requires the Ledger to authorise transfers. Every transaction must be approved on the device screen itself.
Connecting through a desktop browser uses a direct USB connection, as explained in Phantom's extension setup guide. You must use a cable that supports data transfer rather than a charge-only cable. Before connecting, close Ledger Live completely. Ledger Live can block the browser from establishing a connection to the device. You can link accounts when creating a brand-new Phantom wallet or by opening the account menu inside an existing wallet.
Mobile pairing works differently because it relies entirely on Bluetooth. Phantom outlines these steps in its mobile pairing guide. The connection step and the transaction signing step require opposite conditions on the device. Phantom's mobile troubleshooting guide specifies that your Ledger must sit unlocked on its main home screen during connection. Phantom instructs you not to open any apps yet during the connection step. Once setup completes, signing requires the exact opposite. You must open the matching network app on the Ledger before submitting a transaction. Ledger also maintains its own Solana connection walkthrough covering account access.
Start here
- 1Confirm your Ledger model is on Phantom's supported list, and note whether it connects by USB cable or over Bluetooth.
- 2Install or update the Solana, Ethereum, and Bitcoin apps on your device, noting that the Ethereum app covers Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible chains.
- 3Update your device firmware.
- 4Enable blind signing in the settings of each specific chain app you intend to use.
- 5Connect your Ledger to your computer using a data-capable USB cable and unlock it.
- 6Open Phantom and select Connect Hardware Wallet. From the initial welcome screen, click Create a New Wallet to reach it. Inside an existing wallet, open the profile avatar and click Add Account instead.
- 7Select your device when detected, click Connect, and choose Continue.
- 8Select your desired network in Phantom. Open the matching app, such as Solana, on your device when prompted.
- 9Repeat the network selection step for any additional chains you want to use with your accounts.
- 10Confirm your imported accounts in Phantom and keep your Ledger ready for approving future outgoing transactions.
Strengths
- Your private keys remain completely offline on the physical device while you view balances and manage transfers inside Phantom.
- Phantom supports both surfaces, so a Stax or Flex can connect by cable on a desktop and over Bluetooth on a phone. Every other supported Ledger model works on one surface only.
- You add each network separately. You can import Solana, Ethereum, or Bitcoin accounts on demand.
- Phantom maintains its supported hardware lists and fix steps directly, so you can check status changes at the source.
Common misunderstandings
- You cannot pair a Nano S or Nano S Plus with the phone app.
- Trezor, Tangem, and the Ledger Nano Gen5 are unsupported. Phantom states Saga Seed Vault is end of support, and that Saga devices no longer receive updates from Solana Mobile. Phantom maintains this table itself and restamps it as it updates, so supported models can change over time. Check Phantom's table before buying a device, or choose a supported Ledger model instead.
- Ledger Live can block browser connections. Close Ledger Live before connecting or signing in Phantom.
- Blind signing must be enabled per app and asks you to approve instructions you cannot fully read on the device. Phantom says to review transaction details in Phantom and on the Ledger before confirming, and to approve only transactions you recognise and trust.
- Connecting and signing need opposite device states. Pairing keeps the Ledger on the home screen, while signing expects the chain app open.
Common questions
Does Phantom wallet work with Ledger?
Yes, Phantom works with Ledger across both the browser extension and the mobile application. The desktop browser extension connects over USB for the Nano S, Nano S Plus, Stax, and Flex. The mobile app connects over Bluetooth for the Nano X, Stax, and Flex. You can find more wallet comparisons in Phantom vs Solflare.
Is Phantom wallet compatible with Ledger Nano X?
Yes, the Ledger Nano X is compatible with Phantom over Bluetooth on the mobile app. Keep the device unlocked on its home screen when you begin the pairing process.
Can I use a Ledger Nano S with Phantom on my phone?
No, you cannot pair a Ledger Nano S with the Phantom mobile app. Phantom only supports Bluetooth connections on mobile devices, which limits mobile pairing to the Nano X, Stax, and Flex. A Nano S or Nano S Plus works only through the browser extension with a USB cable.
Why is Phantom not connecting to my Ledger on desktop?
Ledger Live is often the cause because running it in the background can block the browser connection. Close Ledger Live completely, disconnect and reconnect your device using a USB cable that supports data, and unlock it. If issues continue, restart your browser and update your device firmware.
Why is my Ledger not signing transactions in Phantom?
You must open the matching network app on the device before submitting the transfer. For example, open the Solana app on the Ledger when approving a Solana transaction. If your transaction requires blind signing, check your on-device app settings to ensure blind signing is set to Enabled.
Does Phantom wallet support Trezor or Tangem?
No, Phantom lists both Trezor and Tangem as unsupported across all models. If you currently hold your funds on those devices, you cannot connect them to the Phantom interface. You will need a supported Ledger model to use hardware accounts in Phantom.
Do I still need my Ledger once it is connected to Phantom?
Yes, you still need your physical device whenever you submit a transaction. Connecting to Phantom lets you view your balances and stage transfers, but the private keys stay inside the Ledger. The Ledger must approve and cryptographically sign each outgoing transaction.
Will Phantom ever ask for my recovery phrase?
No, Phantom will never ask for your recovery phrase or private keys. Never enter your Ledger recovery phrase into Phantom, a website, or any digital application.
