About gemini fees

Gemini charges very different fees depending on which of its two products you use. Gemini ActiveTrader (the order-book interface) charges a transparent maker/taker percentage that steps down by 30-day volume — comparable to Coinbase Advanced Trade or Kraken Pro. The standard Gemini mobile app — the default screen most retail users land on — stacks a flat or percentage transaction fee plus a separate 1.49% convenience fee, which routinely runs several times more expensive than ActiveTrader for the same trade. This page covers the current published rates, the ActiveTrader-vs-mobile-app trap, funding methods, and withdrawal costs.

How it works

On Gemini ActiveTrader (available in the web platform and Gemini's separate ActiveTrader mobile app), you trade against the real order book and pay a maker/taker percentage from Gemini's published 30-day-volume tier table. Rates step down through the tiers as monthly notional volume rises. On the standard Gemini mobile app buy/sell screen — what most first-time users see — Gemini charges a two-part fee: a transaction fee that's either a flat dollar amount (on small orders) or a percentage (on larger orders), plus a separate 1.49% convenience fee on top of the market price. Small orders under $200 pay a flat fee of $0.99–$2.99 that can work out to well over 1% just on the flat component, before the 1.49% convenience fee stacks on. Funding by ACH is free on Gemini; debit-card funding carries an additional processing fee. Withdrawals: Gemini offers a set number of free crypto and fiat withdrawals per calendar month per asset, and charges published per-asset fees for anything beyond that — plus the underlying network cost for the chain you withdraw on. Gemini Earn (the yield product) was suspended in November 2022 following the Genesis bankruptcy and is not currently active for US customers.

How to pay less

  1. 1Use Gemini ActiveTrader (web or the separate ActiveTrader mobile app) instead of the standard Gemini mobile app — same account, dramatically lower fees.
  2. 2Post limit orders on ActiveTrader to pay the maker rate instead of the taker rate.
  3. 3Fund by ACH bank transfer — it's free — instead of debit card, which carries a processing fee.
  4. 4Stay within your free monthly withdrawal allowance where possible, and pick the cheapest supported network for withdrawals beyond it.

Pros

  • Gemini ActiveTrader's maker/taker pricing is transparent and competitive with other US-regulated pro interfaces.
  • US-regulated: NYDFS-licensed trust company, with SOC 2 Type 2 certification.
  • Free monthly withdrawal allowance for both crypto and fiat covers casual users at no cost.

Watch out for

  • The standard Gemini mobile app's stack of transaction fee + 1.49% convenience fee is materially more expensive than ActiveTrader for the same trade.
  • Flat-fee tiers on small orders (under $200) work out to a very high effective percentage — a $10 buy paying a $0.99 flat fee is nearly 10% on the flat component alone.
  • Gemini Earn suspension since November 2022 removed the yield product retail users came for, and any 'earn' figures from before that date are not currently available.

Common questions

How much does Gemini charge in fees?

It depends on which Gemini product you use. Gemini ActiveTrader (web + separate ActiveTrader mobile app) charges a transparent maker/taker percentage from a published 30-day-volume tier table, comparable to other pro interfaces. The standard Gemini mobile app stacks a transaction fee — either $0.99–$2.99 flat on small orders or ~1.49% on larger orders — plus a separate 1.49% convenience fee on top of the market price, which is materially more expensive than ActiveTrader for the same trade.

What's the difference between Gemini ActiveTrader and the mobile app?

Gemini ActiveTrader is the order-book trading interface — you see real bid/ask depth, place limit or market orders, and pay maker/taker percentages that step down by volume. The standard Gemini mobile app is the simple beginner buy/sell screen that hides the order book and charges a transaction fee plus a 1.49% convenience fee on the market price. Both share the same Gemini account, KYC, and balances; ActiveTrader is available inside the standard app under Trading Interface and as its own separate ActiveTrader iOS/Android app.

Does Gemini charge withdrawal fees?

Gemini gives every account a set number of free crypto and fiat withdrawals per calendar month per asset. Beyond that free allowance, published per-asset fees apply, plus the underlying network cost for the chain you withdraw on. Check Gemini's live fee schedule for the current free-withdrawal counts and per-asset amounts before assuming a number here is still current.

How does Gemini compare to Coinbase on fees?

On the pro interfaces, Gemini ActiveTrader and Coinbase Advanced Trade both use tiered maker/taker pricing at comparable base-tier ranges; the exact winner depends on your 30-day volume tier and which specific pairs you trade. On the beginner buy screens, both are pricey — Gemini's mobile app stacks a transaction fee plus a 1.49% convenience fee; Coinbase Simple stacks a spread plus a Coinbase fee. Both are materially more expensive than their own pro interface. Check the live fee pages at each exchange before picking one on cost alone.

Is Gemini Earn still available?

No — Gemini Earn was suspended in November 2022 after Genesis (the counterparty running the program) filed for bankruptcy. US Earn customers have been going through a lengthy recovery process, and Gemini has not re-launched the product. Any 'Gemini Earn APY' number from before November 2022 is not currently attainable.

Is Gemini fee-free for makers?

No — even at Gemini ActiveTrader's highest volume tier, the maker rate is not zero (unlike some Binance.US structures where the maker rate has hit 0% for eligible pairs at certain tiers). Gemini's base-tier maker rate is a small percentage that steps down but remains non-zero. Check Gemini's published fee schedule for the current per-tier maker and taker numbers before assuming a rate you've seen elsewhere is still current.
